Who Am I Beyond What I Do?

Navigating Identity Transitions with Hypnotherapy & Inner Child Healing
There comes a moment—perhaps after a career shift, retirement, the end of a relationship, or simply a deep pause—when you ask:
Who am I, really, when I’m no longer doing what I’ve always done?
This is more than a passing question. It’s often a soul-deep reckoning. Especially if your identity has long been shaped by roles—professional or personal—stepping into the unknown can feel disorienting, even painful.
An article by Chua Mui Hoong in The Straits Times put it powerfully: transitions often require us to accept our loss of significance, relevance, and the comfort of operating within a known domain. We may find ourselves feeling unanchored, grieving the parts of us that once held meaning.
But here’s the truth:
You are not your title. You are not your to-do list. You are not your past expertise.
At Svasti.life, we see these shifts not as breakdowns—but as sacred invitations to transform.
Conferred vs. Constructed Identity
From the moment we’re born, parts of our identity are conferred upon us—assigned by family, culture, or society. We may be told we’re the “responsible one,” the “smart one,” the “good girl,” or that we must pursue certain paths to be acceptable or loved.
In my own journey, I realized I had unconsciously derived my identity from being:
- A good daughter
- A loving mother
- A reliable caretaker
These roles gave me purpose, but also tethered my self-worth to how much I could give. So, when those roles began to shift, I found myself asking: “If I’m no longer needed in the same way, who am I now?”
The Freeze of Identity
Many people experience identity paralysis—a freeze state where you no longer recognize the version of yourself you’ve outgrown but haven’t yet anchored into a new one.
You’re not who you used to be...
But you’re also unsure who you’re becoming.
This space can feel confusing, lonely, fearful, and grief-filled. But this grief is necessary. You’re not just letting go of a role. You’re mourning the familiarity, the confidence, the respect it once gave you.
Rewriting the Story with Intention
Like the author of the article, I am also writing a new story—one that reimagines my value and voice in the world.
For her, it was leaving behind a journalist role. For me, it is shifting from nurturer and achiever to healer and guide.
It wasn’t instant. It took time. But it has been profoundly liberating.
Hypnotherapy: A Bridge to the Self
Hypnotherapy helped me reconnect with the parts of me buried beneath roles, process layers of self-worth and belonging, and visualize a version of me who leads from wholeness. It moved me from confusion to clarity.
Inner Child Healing: Letting the "Good Girl" Rest
My younger self believed she had to earn love by being helpful and successful. Inner child healing allows me to reassure her that being herself is enough. Now, I help others do the same—break free from old roles and feel safe being authentic.
